Communicative purpose:
- the self-assertion of the artist's personal aesthetics/philosophy underlying his/her work in general, or a particular work/exhibition
- stating the reasons for creating one work or the other, themes, identifying oneself with a style
- describing own techniques and giving reasons for own choices
- sharing all the necessary information in order to be better understood by the public
- advertising oneself
- arousing the reader's interest and curiosity
- marketing material on cards, flyers, mailers, posters
- accompanying slides, photos sent to different art curators, art dealers, etc, in order to get promoted or bought by them; participating in international art contests; applying for international creation grants
- quotations in art reviews, in different articles (to illustrate/support the critic's analyses, interpretations, and evaluations), in art history texts (as a research source)
move-pattern:
Move I. Personal philosophy/ies and aesthetics
Step 1. Art philosophies and/or aesthetics the artist rely on; general ideas guiding the creation; perspective on art
Step 2. General themes, sources
Move 2. Personal style and techniques
Step 1. Defining personal style
Step 2. Describing the favored techniques
Step 3. Suggesting originality
Move 3. Commenting on current exhibition/work
Step 1. Stating the general idea (or the specific one), sources of inspiration
Step 2. Describing the process of creation
Step 3. Suggesting the meanings of the exhibition and/or the work (details, explaining metaphors, signs, symbols
- a very subjective genre, hence the use of the first person personal pronoun "I"
- a type of 'confession'
- using catchy words and expressions to attract the reader's attention
- avoiding prescribing a certain reading of own work while still offering some guidelines
- implicating the reader (suggesting a kind of conversation)
- avoiding obscurity (weighing the amount of the necessary"artspeak")
- writing with the audience in mind (who do you address? is it a professional public or a general public?)

TASK 2: Read through this article; the author seems to disagree with writing artist's statements by mentioning some dangers of writing them inappropriately; he expresses a personal opinion as to who should write the artist's statement. What do you think? Should it be the artist himself/herself to write the artist's statement, or should someone else write this text on his/her behalf? Give reasons.

TASK 3: What would you say about yourself and your art in your statement?
HELPFUL
The artist’s statements are sometimes supposed to accompany the artist’s résumés; therefore, the specific information provided in the latter should be avoided in the former unless that is relevant to the works. The résumé is a rather official document, a personal marketing tool through which the artist establishes credibility when approaching a gallery or any other institution. It offers more precise information about the artist: a short biography, education, experience in the field, and recognition, all presented simply and neatly. It is not a full text; the information is supplied as a kind of title list, with the following headers:
The name à educationà previous experience (e.g. apprenticeships, scholarships, creative camps) à awards à exhibitions (solo, or group, the city and country) à recognition (newspaper articles, interviews, TV or radio appearances à representation (if the artist is represented by a gallery) à commissioned works (in private or museum collections)
TASK 4: write your own résumé. Below are some web examples:
The two genres are meant to offer a clear image of the artist in relation to both the general audience (especially the first) and specialized audiences (both)

ReplyDeleteTask 1. Each and every artist has their own unique and special way of presenting themselves, but for me, personally, Jonathan H Dough has an artist's statement I resonate most with. The statement is interesting because it successfully combines personal philosophy with specific stylistic and artistic choices such as the use of blue-painted domestic objects and stenciled text to convey deeper social, political, and cultural issues. Another reason why I chose this artist statement is because the artist used poetic phrases and colorful language, like "dream-like" and "calmness," to help create a sensory impression of the work without needing to see it.
Task 2. As the text states, I also believe that it should be the artist who writes the artist's statement themselves. The reason why is because even if it's short or imperfect, the statement becomes more authentic, personal and that’s what readers are looking for: a real, humane connection to the artist. As cited from the text: "Jessie’s revised statement belongs to only one person, and it allows a viewer to locate something of the artist within her images."
Task 3. My design does not only seek the beauty and aesthetics of the form, but also the echo of a forgotten gesture, of crafts that still pulse in the very being of things. My design wants to be romanian, and that we have in common. It is not about the forgotten world to which we shall return, because we can never return to what once was. Tradition is not merely a source of inspiration for me, but a living root, perhaps part of a greater tree I have yet to fully discover, taking shape in objects and spaces that whisper the story of this country. I seek to weave the old with the new, not as contrast but as continuity, a natural and necessary flow, because we can never have the new without the old, but the old can help us grow into something new.

ReplyDeleteTask 1. All the statements are short and clear, making them be easily to visualize and comprehend. The one that I`m most found of is the statement of Maja Savic because she was able to make her point more appealing, having a strong visual impact. For instance, she associated the idea of animation with motion by making the letters of the words „animation” and „movement” literally move or shake.
Task 2. At every opening, the visitors and the people from the community establish a strong communication with the artist. It is beneficial for both parties, and so, I think the artist`s statement should indeed be done by them, not a third party, because this way the statement can provide a clear, truthful and understanding point of view.
Task 3. Design is not decoration — it is a direction. It’s the unseen structure of our daily lives, present from public benches, road signs, to systems and tools. In a country where people have always known how to „make things work”, design is not foreign. It is simply that same instinct, made intentional. It improves how we move, understand, and live together, growing stronger through dialogue with ergonomics, architecture and art history. These fields remind us that beauty, function and tradition are deeply linked. For me, design is care made visible. It’s how we shape the world — and how it shapes us back.

ReplyDeleteTask 1: Out of all the artist statements, the one I liked the most was Wesley Fleming’s. It felt really genuine and easy to understand, and I liked that he talked about how nature, especially insects, inspired his work. I could tell that he really cares about what he’s doing and that there’s a lot of love and dedication in his art. His statement isn’t trying to sound overly complicated or too “artsy” just for the sake of it, it just explains his process and what matters to him. I think that’s why it works so well. Some of the other statements were a bit too abstract for me, and I had to read them a few times to even understand what the artist was trying to say. Wesley’s was the most relatable and gave me a clear idea of who he is as an artist.
Task 2: I think the artist should be the one writing their own statement. Even if it’s not perfect, I feel like it’s more personal and real when it comes directly from the artist. They know best what they were thinking, what inspired them, or what they wanted to express. If someone else writes it, it might sound more professional, but it could also feel cold or generic. I think people want to feel a connection with the artist, not just the work, and the statement is one way to do that. It’s okay to get help or feedback, especially with grammar or structure, but the message should be the artist’s.
Task 3: Right now, I see design as a way to express feelings and ideas that are sometimes hard to put into words. I like to play with contrasts and create a mood or a story through space or visuals. My work usually has a clean, simple look, but I also try to add some deeper meaning behind it. Sometimes it’s inspired by things like memory, the unknown, or personal experiences. I don’t want my designs to just look good—I want them to make people stop and think, or feel something, even if it’s something small. For me, design is about communication, not just decoration.
Task 4: ABOUT ME

1.Wesley Fleming s artist statement stands out for its heartfelt connection to nature and its clear articulation of his creative journey. He describes himself as “an ambassador for smaller denizens of the earth,” which shows how much he cares about insects and tiny creatures that most people ignore. His goal is to help others see their beauty and importance, and that really comes through in both his words and his art.
ReplyDelete2. I think artists should write these texts themselves because an artist statement is more than just an explanation of artwork, it’s a chance for artists to express their voice and share the ideas behind their creative process. When artists write their own statements, the result is more honest, personal, and connected to the work itself. No one understands the emotions, inspirations, and decisions behind a piece better than the artist who created it.
3. My work explores the connection between emotion, memory, and the physical world. Through drawing, I usualy try to turn my memories into lasting visual narratives. I’m drawn to texture and contrast. Each piece is a reflection and an invitation for the viewer to slow down, look closer, and feel something personal, because memories can never come back, so we got to truly live them.
4. About me: I am a visual graphic student at UAD Cluj-Napoca, third year. I am always interested in trying new techniques when it comes to my artwork, but i usually incline towards using graphite and colored pencils in order to express intense emotion. Experience: Practica at Art Melange Gallery for the first and second semester of the third year.

The one that I find the most intriguing belongs to Fleming, and it stands out for its vivid imagery and emotional depth. Fleming combines technical mastery with a personal and imaginative vision, rooted in science fiction, nature, and the tactile process of working with glass. His description of conjuring “plants, animals, and mystical beings” speaks to a deeply creative impulse that goes beyond aesthetics — into storytelling and transformation.
What makes Fleming’s statement particularly compelling is its balance between poetic expression and professional credibility. References to working with MIT Glass Lab and training in Murano show serious dedication to the craft, while phrases like “alchemical potential” and “ritual objects” bring a magical, almost mythic dimension. Fleming’s ability to fuse wonder with skill makes his statement both memorable and inspiring.
task 2
I believe the artist should write their own statement, even if it’s not perfect. What matters most is authenticity
a direct connection between the artist and the viewer. As the text says, “Jessie’s revised statement belongs to only one person,” and that personal voice allows the audience to feel the artist behind the work.
While a third party might write something more polished, it risks losing sincerity. Visitors at openings want to connect with the person behind the art, not just the product. The artist’s own words, even if imperfect, offer truth and emotion and that’s what people remember.
task 3
In my art, I explore the boundary between the human and the monstrous. I'm interested how fear, desire, or trauma can shape and distort the body, revealing parts of ourselves that are usually hidden. Through exaggerated forms, dark tones, and surreal characters, I try to bring out raw emotions and fragments of identity that often stay beneath the surface.
Each figure I create represents something internal, something broken, angry, vulnerable, or misunderstood. I use the grotesque not just to shock, but to create a space for reflection: to show that what we fear or reject can also be a mirror of our own humanity.
For me, the monstrous isn’t just horror, it’s honesty. It's a way of expressing what words sometimes can’t. I want people to feel both discomfort and connection when they look at my work. If something strange stays with them after they’ve looked away, then I’ve done my job.
task 4
I`m a student at Universitatea de Arte și Design Cluj-Napoca, photo-video department, 3rd year. I’m in a continuous process of self-discovery, using my art to bring the inner world to the surface, not just my own, but that of others as well. I want to reveal what usually stays hidden, the parts of us that people often don’t know how to see or choose not to look at.
