Move V: Developing refutations and arguments:
Step 1: Developing refutations 1,2,3 (why the existing counterarguments are not valid, or why they are now superseded)
Step 2: Developing constructive arguments 1,2,3 (insisting upon why the proposed constructive arguments are valid, or why they are better, newer, a.s.o. , than the existing counterarguments)
Move VI: Concluding upon the validity of the thesis
Move VII: Works cited
Specific discourse strategies (besides those employed by the critical essay):
Task: Read the research paper Marina Abramovics--Between Art and the Extreme by Roxana Andonie.
What type of research paper is it? Which were the previous findings on this subject the author had access to and presents in her paper? What is the new insight she proposes here? What do you think about her use of sources? Are they relevant? Are they well-acknowledged?
Rhythm (series)
secondary purposes:
- to persuade readers that the proposed thesis (opinion, idea) is right (expository research paper)
- to persuade readers that the proposed thesis is the correct/better one as opposed to another thesis (argumentative research paper)
- to survey the most valid and convincing of the existing research on a subject (descriptive research paper)
instances of research papers:
the seminar paper, different papers throughout the MA and PHD programs, the graduate course thesis, the M.A. thesis/dissertation, the doctoral dissertation, the feature / scientific article (in specialized magazines, bulletins, journals, on the Internet), the lab/scientific report, the scientific lecture

Specific discourse strategies (besides those employed by the critical essay):
- inserting other opinions (other authors) on the same subject
- synthesizing previous research
- assuming the voice of authority (with rights and obligations)
- commenting upon sources (by agreeing or disagreeing with them)
- paraphrasing
- quoting
- acknowledging to sources (notes + bibliography)

I am Bucisan Vanessa from the Graphics Department, and Roxana Andonie's Marina Abramović: Between Art and the Extreme is an argumentative research paper that delves into Abramović’s boundary pushing performances, focusing on the tension between art and extremity. The author builds on existing research that discusses the artist's exploration of physical and mental limits, challenging traditional views of art. Andonie offers a fresh perspective by highlighting how Abramović’s extreme actions such as pain and vulnerability transform the audience's perception, turning art into a visceral experience. The sources used in the paper are relevant and drawn from critical studies on Abramović, integrated well into the argument. The acknowledgment of these sources is clear, reinforcing the author’s credibility and the originality of her insights.

ReplyDeleteThis is an expository research paper. It describes Marina Abramovic's background, key performances, and her statements about her work. It analyzes themes like the limits of the body and mind, the performer-audience relationship, and the use of pain in art.
The previous findings on this subject the author had access to illustrate information about Marina’s birth, education, family, title, the start of her performance art in the 1970s, her connection to ritualistic performance, and her views on pain and pushing the body’s limits.
Roxana Andonie suggests that Marina Abramovic, while starting with provocative performance art, has moved beyond in order to create important works. The research paper shows how her challenging practice, which tests the limits of mental and physical endurance, has greatly contributed to performance art. The thesis highlights her quest for emotional and conscious transformation using her body as both subject and medium.
The sources are mostly well-cited, direct quotes are attributed with the source and year, except for Gershman, in which case the year isn’t shown. A full citation for each source in the works cited section at the end of the paper is needed. Overall, Roxana Andonie effectively supports her points with relevant sources.
I am Simion Alexandra-Maria from the Graphics Department.1. This it's clearly an exposition research paper. The autor's goal isn't to argue against someone else's opinion, but to explore and explain Marina Abramović's work, especially how it pushes boundaries in the art world. 2.She uses earlier research and critical writing about Abramović, especially focused on the Rhythm series. These sources help her explain the context and meaning behind the performance. It's clear that the autor did serious research, not just sharing personal opinion. 3.What stood out to me is how the paper highlights the emotional and psychological layers in Abramović's performance. The autor suggests that these aren't just extreme or shocking acts, they're deep, thought-provoking experiences that challenge the audience and the artist itself. 4.The sources are relevant and well-used. She integrates them intoner analysis smoothly and always gives proper credit. It doesn't feel like she's just quoting people, it feels like she's building something meaningful from the information. 5.Overall, the paper helps you understand Abramović's art in a deeper way. It's well-researched and clear. Even if someone isn't familiar with performance art, this paper gives them a good starting point.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Răzvan Catrișcău and I am a student of History and Theory of Art, 2nd year. The text written by Roxana Andonie explores the path from pioneer status to that of the so-called "grandmother of performance art" of Maria Abramović, highlighting the artist's unique way of pushing artistic language towards its most extreme form possible. The perspective of approaching Maria Abramović's artistic manifestation in the text is based on a deep exploration of the artist's vast catalog. I say this because the analized works are precisely those that emphasize, in a crescendo of intensity as the text progresses, the way in which the body-psychic relationship is engaged in a spiritual ritual, with roots strongly connected to the affective exchange between artist and spectator. The author's new contribution to previous studies on the concept consists in emphasizing this emotional exchange between those who watch the artistic manifestation and the artist and the double instance within which the cathartic effect of the performative acts occurs. The sources are very efficiently utilized and very organically placed in the text, so that they gradually contribute to supporting the new perspective approached.
